Tell Me Your Sinful Pleasures & I’ll Give You Sweet Treats

by Julie Kalivretenos on February 19, 2010

Now that we’re past the romance of Valentine’s Day, some hearts have been broken.  That is, the processed, sugary, artificial ingredient-laden junk shaped like hearts.

A few ladies (and gents) I’ve spoken with recently aren’t too happy with their indulgences of the “holiday”, including the stuff made to look pretty all wrapped in bows.  The stuff that only goes to wreck our New Year’s healthy eating resolutions.  Which brought up some discussion about sweet treat alternatives, specifically raw desserts.  Not just for special occasions, but how does one go about whipping up healthy treats that will satisfy a sweet tooth but won’t result in the obvious dietary adversities?  Does such a dream really exist?  Can “raw” foods really fill that spot for sinful cravings?  And if so, what in the world should I make?

There are absolutely gorgeous photos and equally tantalizing recipes of decadent raw desserts like cookies, cupcakes, cheesecakes, mousses, ice creams, sorbets, tarts, truffles, candies – in books and on the internet.  If you didn’t know beforehand what you were looking at, you’d never know they were raw.  During my recent discussion with those new to the whole idea of raw food, desserts are not only the most intriguing, but also the most intimidating.  And this need not be the case.

I’m a girl who’s never cared much for baking and seldom even made dessert in my pre-raw days.  Part of the reason is that the rules of baking can be so darned temperamental, and somehow I just don’t muster up the patience.  On the whole, raw food preparation is actually much friendlier than baking or cooking.  There’s fewer margins for error, you never have to worry about burning anything, and modifications can easily be made.

{ raw vegan "Black & White Hazelnut Truffles" }

I want to show my readers that with a little creativity, virtually any sweet indulgence can be transformed into a healthy, guilt-free experience.  Raw desserts are so incredibly rich and delicious, it’s surprising how even a small portion can be quite filling.  Best of all, what a perfect way to show true love to your significant other, your friends, your children, or your family.  We all deserve such sweet gifts and pleasures without sacrificing our health, right?

So let’s hear it! What is that one dessert that you absolutely adore, the one that makes you drool as you think of it?  That one that you’d never think could be transformed into something without consequence to your diet or your health?

Enter these sinful pleasures in the “comments” area below.  The winning entry/suggestion (based on factors such as seasonality, ingredient availability, and originality) will be chosen exactly two weeks from today on Friday, March 5.

Then, on Friday, March 12, the winning entry will be created, photographed and published along with the recipe here on Julie’s Raw Ambition.  And, the winner will also receive a goody box of non-perishable raw ingredients from Sunfood.com that are staples for making sweet treats, including Artisana coconut butter, vanilla beans, cacao nibs, and more!

So mark down these dates and get those entries in!  I’m looking extremely forward to this experience and having some fun!

  • RitaR
My fav.....Naleśnik, it's basically a Polish crepe or light pancake, with choc~caramel sauce!!! So light and sooooo devine!!!!!!!!!TDF!!!
  • Sunny Ploch
My favorite indulgence is dark chocolate /choclate truffles
  • Oh this is great! I'd take just about anything cookie dough flavored. How about a cookie dough truffle? I'd LOVE to see a healthy recipe for this :)
  • Tiramisu ....yummmy.....
  • pam101360
Any raw desserts, but lemon pie or lemon bars....are yummy!

    Great giveaway!

    Enjoy!
  • Tiramisu, I love love love that dessert. Fantastic giveaway. I have been gradually including more foods in my diet and I am loving it. Have not tried raw desserts yet though.
  • Mmmm. Truffles. Soft, gooey center, crisp shell, flavorful chocolate, with a hint or lemon extract.
  • shhenning
Raw "puppy chow" or "muddy buddies" depending on the part of the country in which you live. Usually made with rice Chex covered in a mixture of chocolate/peanut butter/butter and then coated in powdered sugar. There's got to be a way to raw-i-fy that with buckwheat crispies...
  • Mmmm. Truffles. Soft, gooey center, crisp shell, flavorful chocolate, with a hint or lemon extract.
  • Jamie
Whoops! Didn't mean to reply to this comment, just the post.
  • Hummmm....maybe a chocolate lava cake or just simply a soft, rich brownie. No frosting on the brownie, I think that ruins it.
  • What a great contest! As happy as I am with dates and dark chocolate as my dessert, I must say that I've always wondered if my favorite maple bars could be "raw"ified. I didn't really eat donuts much as a kid, but when I did I always chose maple bars! Can't wait to see what wins!

Oh man, my grandma makes this stuff she calls Bavarian Delight...I tried to look it up but I couldn't find anything. I haven't had it since going vegan over a year ago, although I could veganize it, but a RAW version would be incredible! The bottom layer is graham cracker, then I can't remember the order of the layers after that, but there is chocolate pudding, cream cheese, vanilla pudding, whipped cream, and chocolate shavings on top.
  • Oh WOW...that sounds amazing. I LOVE Bavarian creme :D
  • max
S'mores. I think the hardest part would be the marshmallow, I don't know how you'd get the right texture.
  • Tori
    peppermint patties!!!
My favorite candy before going raw :)
  • kimberli b
    Cheesecake, cheesecake, and.....cheesecake!
  • I hear ya, girl. Cheesecake is an all time favorite dessert of mine. ANYTHING cheesecake works for me too!
  • JustAudrey
I LOVE desserts...so picking just one is hard. But I would have to say that pineapple upside down cake is a favorite of mine that I haven't had much success (yet!) making vegan.
  • Oooh yes...that's a good one!
  • Oh man this is hard..but I have to say chocolate and peanut butter are insane together..so I vote for chocolate peanut butter cups. Cool idea for a giveaway:)
  • And another vote for peanut butter cups!
  • Jenn
mmm... oreo cheesecake!! i wish that it could be vegan!! so delish but there is nothing healthy about it AT ALL. would love to try a healthy recipe for it!
  • Actually I think this one could be done. Sounds so good :) Stay tuned...
  • Kathleen
My sinful treat are raw chocolate macaroons...They are so rich and gooey. I have to give them away to friends so I dont keep in the house! My friends love them to death too!
  • Have you tried a raw macaroon? Sarma has a recipe for that in "Raw Food Real World", so does Matthew Kenney in his book, "Everyday Raw". They are awesome indeed!
  • Heidi
From a page lurker.....I love your site, the foods you prepare look amazing and delicious. I have yet to actually TRY anything raw though. Thinking about trying that restaurant in Winter Park, but I digress. My suggestion for you is creme brulee. I would think the crunchy top would be the challenging part but what do I know? Thanks for providing a great site.
  • Thanks for coming out of lurking! Creme brulee is a great suggestion. Thanks!
  • I would have to say Peanut Butter Pie! It's something that's even hard to find in general.
  • hmm well it was paczki day in michigan last week and everywhere i saw a paczki i drooled at the smell!! i was so sad that i couldnt have one but they are for sure not vegan and definitely not healthY! how amazing it would be if u could make one of these desserts good for you?!? i would be amazed!
  • Packzi sound great! I've never tried one myself but have heard all about them. Sort of like a donut, right?
  • rrnancyr
I love eclairs - the pastry filled with vanilla cream and frosted with chocolate frosting.

    Thanks.
  • Mmmmm...a favorite of mine too!
  • Luke
brownie cheesecake with chocolate drizzled on top!
  • Sarah
My favorite sinful dessert is Tiramisu - I haven't had a good one for ages and it would be a trick to reproduce it raw - but a great challenge!
  • Ok sorry i re-read this and need to say that I raw and vegan'ed girl scout samoas cookies. I have rawified everything from choco chip cookie dough to vegan bananas foster. I have sooo many dessert links on my blog but here are the samoas.
    http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2009/10/vegan-almost-raw-girl-scout-samoas.html

i also high raw and vegan'ed reese's PB cups
    http://www.loveveggiesandyoga.com/2009/11/raw-vegan-peanut-butter-cups.html

and then made vegan white choc ones too

  • This is awesome Averie! I actually came across your blog and recipes recently while researching some of the entries. I'm definitely aiming to do something that hasn't been done before. I know it's difficult but that's part of the challenge! GREAT recipes there girl! :)
  • Well I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve...if you tell me WHAT you're looking for, sort of, that kind of helps me mentally narrow down my arsenal...I know you want the surprise element :) but some direction is awesome if you have any to give :)
  • tanyaviola
I know it sounds simple, but I absolutely LOVE brownies....rich, chocolatey brownies, with mocha almond fudge ice cream.....I haven't had the real thing in ages, since I've become mostly vegan. I know there are a lot of vegan brownie recipes, but I've tried a few and it wasn't the same....I need something close!! (i've also cut down on oils and fats, so I guess that's another problem with making decent brownies, LOL!) Perhaps a raw one might be the best??
  • whitvia
Boston cream pie makes my heart beat.
  • Kelsey
i adore peanut butter cup ice cream. and peanut butter cups.
basically, anything with chocolate and peanut butter :]
  • Another peanut butter cup entry! Mmmm
  • Oh I love this! My favorite candy bar used to be the Reese's fast break, with peanut butter, nougat, and chocolate. On top of that, something about cheesecake just screams decadence. My idea for a dessert would be a raw-no bake bar. The bottom layer I guess would be a cashew crumb pressing for structure. Then, on top of that, a rich, truffle-like layer of chocolate made with a good amount of cocoa butter. Then a layer of rich nougat(not even sure what this is or how it could be "raw), topped with a layer of peanut butter and peanut-halves. And then the last topper would be a drizzle of a more liquidy raw chocolate.
  • Mmmmmm that sounds really really good! Thanks for your suggestion, Evan :)
  • sarah
Fried bananas with coconut ice cream! Please Please create something as yummy! :)
  • Hmmm....actually this wouldn't be too hard at all. Wow, now I want this. For breakfast. Now. :)
  • Hey Julie. I had no idea you were back to posting. I guess I have to fix the link on my page.

Anyway, I have a major sweet tooth, so I've found a way to "rawify" just about every one of my cravings. I've even made most of the suggestions listed, including a wide array of raw cupcakes (my favorite). I just haven't gotten around to making an angel food version.
  • ShannonMarie, honey, you are like a raw food master craftsman(lady). Your desserts are insane!!! So creative! I love your blog :)
  • Okay, I figured out the angel food thing. Can I change mine to marshmallows?
  • Sure! So when are you gonna post the angel food cake ;D ???
  • My hubby is not too fond of the fact that I've being giving away tons of recipes for free. He'd like me to save this one for an e-book. As a result, I trying to put something together soon. Wish me luck :-)
  • Has your hubby been talking to my hubby? Mine says the same thing! I told him not to worry... The world will not run out of recipes, n someone out there's gotta know who we are n like our stuff first, right? Good luck to you! I know you'll come up with something amazing :)
  • I don't know if it will be amazing, but it would put a lot of my stuff all in one place. Most of it would be recipes already on my site, which is why I need to hold onto something new.

Your recipes are spectacular. You really should put a book together, too, if you can find the time. This isn't as easy as it seems.
  • Actually....I do have one in the works :) And you're right, it's not easy! Lots of work.
  • I hoped so. Good luck!
  • I love your blog, too. Everything you make is so beautiful :-)
  • StayVeg
What a great post, and a great opporunity! My personal favorite would be chocolate lava cake. We made it at summer camp when I was younger. I was hooked ever since. It would be sooo amazing if that could be made raw. Maybe it would be a sort of fudge on the outside and a more liquid chocolate on the inside. I'm new to raw and still need my dehydrator and vita-mix, but I love experimenting with new foods. Good luck everyone!
  • Agreed....another vote for chocolate lava cake. I'd say it is now officially a contender!
  • cinnamon rolls :) i tried some carrot cake balls recently that were awesome, otherwise I would've said that!
  • My fellow raw foodie Susan over at http://rawmazing.com has recently made cinnamon rolls! Check them out, they look, well...rawmazing!
  • Heather
German chocolate cake! I've made german chocolate truffle balls with dates and nuts, but I'm thinking a real cake, in the vein of Ani Phyo's raspberry ganache cake. So delicious but seems either a) ridiculously expensive or b) too time-consuming to make.
  • Raw blondie?
  • Kim
banana rum cake hands down! :)
  • Lili
My favourite dessert ever is tapioca pudding. or any pudding, for that matter. I think it's the texture that I love most. I would love some raw vegan versions of those. Also brownies. Brownies are truly amazing. :)
  • i am a ball making queen ever since i went high raw. i make so many version from "sugar cookie" to cookie dough to my own raw coconut oil chocolate. yes. the raw life has inspired my dessert passions!
  • how about a cadberry cream egg?
  • Hey great idea! Just in time for Easter too!
  • i would LOVE to have raw vegan versions of:

    - lemon cheesecake
    - spiked pecan pie
    - green tea ice cream
    - sugar butter (and lemon) crepes

    mmmmmmmmmmmmm i'm drooling now.
  • ooooo! great giveaway! girlscout samosas and pastry cream!
  • Girlscout samosas? Not familiar with those, so I'll have to check them out! And yes....pastry cream, aaaaahhhh....love that stuff!
  • Well, my fave dessert is vegan dark chocolate or chocomole. But that's pretty darn innocent! Something that could never be healthy, but which I love? A cigarette. But that ain't never gonna be healthified :)
  • Chocomole? What is chocomole? Sounds fun! Yea...no cigs ain't never gonna be healthy for sure!
  • i am just drooling thinking about chocolate souffles/lava cakes (haven't had them in soooooo long) and would be sooo curious to see if they could be made vegan/raw - would be so delicious. the contrast between the fluffy/airy texture and dense chocolate flavor would definitely be a great challenge and i'm sure the results would be a huge people-pleaser. (that, pumpkin pie, chocolate ganache, banoffee pie, or bread pudding, though i prefer what i listed above! can't you just tell i have a huge sweet tooth?!)
  • Yes...chocolate lava cake is a great candidate! I don't think I've yet to see a raw version, which must mean it's probably not easy to achieve. But alas! I will investigate :)
  • elaine
i LOVE talking about desserts! the one dessert i can not think about without inciting massive droolage is red velvet cupcakes! absolute delish and without a doubt affects my health!
  • Okay, culinary wizard who works magic in the kitchen, how 'bout trying your hand at this: Hungarian Dobos Torte. If you can pull this off, I'll...I'll...well, I'll probably weep (with delight!).
  • WOW...now that IS original, and VERY yummy looking. This is worth some further investigation for sure.
  • RED
Hmmmm so many to choose from! This isn't very original, but I gotta say cheesecake bites... with strawberries... or even better, maybe some type of carrot cake bites. It is hard to find even a good vegan carrot cake recipe... with yummy frosting. Yes, I changed my mind, something carrot cakey!
  • I love carrot cake too! Hmmmm
  • Oh, I'd love some raw French Silk pie! I've never seen a raw version of it before, it's one of my favorites!!
  • Definitely Tiramisu, hands down!
  • How I do love me some Tiramisu, but this is a regular offering at Pure Food & Wine and/or One Lucky Duck... Sarma's done an amazing replica. I've yet to try it but I'm sure it's nothing less than heavenly!
  • tyrahD
    chocolate covered donettes!
  • Chocolate pecan pie! <3 So good but so full of sugar.
  • Wow - great suggestions so far! I can tell already it's going to be VERY hard to choose just one... Lord help me.

    1. Cannolis
    2. Strawberry shortcake
    3. Chocolate chip cookie cake
    4. Double chocolate cheesecake
    5. French neopolitan
    6. Coconut cream pie
    7. Chocolate cake roll
    8. Chocolate peanut butter cups
  • adenttexas
    chocolate peanut butter cups!!
  • Wow - awesome giveaway contest! My vote is for a chocolate cake roll. I worked in a German restaurant when I was in high school, and the signature dessert was the chocolate cake roll filled with whipped cream (and sometimes strawberries). Mmm yum.
  • sherhil
What a fun blog! My absolute dessert is COCONUT CREAM PIE with lots of coconut on top. My grandmother's recipe is mouth watering good but... I would HATE to know the calorie count and all the "dead" ingredients we have devoured. :(
  • Such a great post! I love your blog and came across it on Twitter!t This is so intriguing especially since I have been vegan 4 months and hardly make desserts because I am learning how to cook vegan, raw, and gluten-free at times!

The dessert that is sinful for me is double chocolate cheesecake or the delicate and elegant French neopolitan. Yum!
  • That is awesome! I hope you'll find some useful info and recipes here, welcome! And your suggestions are really great...anything sweet and French (or baked) is my weakness too :)
  • We love raw desserts....Strawberry shortcake is something I have always wanted to make raw. Or chocolate chip cookie cake. YUMMY!! I am drooling now !
  • Great giveaway! YUM!!! My favorite would be Cannolis!! An Italian childhood favorite! :)
